GNR reports 133 arrests during hunting enforcement in Portugal

The Portuguese National Republican Guard (GNR), through its Nature and Environment Protection Service (SEPNA), reported 133 arrests during the ‘Operation Artemis 2025/2026’ hunting enforcement season. During this period, authorities inspected 10,751 hunters across the country.

Of the arrests, 70 individuals were detained for hunting in prohibited areas, including non-hunting zones or lands without legal access. The GNR also recorded 136 crimes and 345 administrative offenses. Key infractions included 91 cases of missing mandatory documentation, 75 instances of illegal weapon transport, and 61 infractions involving hunting zone management entities.

The new enforcement cycle, ‘Operation Artemis 2026/2027’, has already commenced and will run until February 28, 2027. This operation aims to ensure compliance with hunting laws to protect biodiversity, ecosystem balance, and public safety.
