Portugal GNR warns of rising false accident scams

The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) has reported a significant rise in “false accident” scams across Portugal during the first half of 2026. These fraudulent schemes, which involve simulating non-existent vehicle collisions to extort immediate payments, have already caused losses totaling 72,540 euros. This figure nearly matches the total losses recorded for the entire year of 2025, which was 77,480 euros.

Authorities noted a 15.4% increase in reported cases compared to the same period in 2025, with 30 complaints filed between January and June. The GNR highlighted a “growing sophistication” in these crimes, noting that perpetrators are increasingly using new extortion methods, such as gaining direct access to victims' bank cards and PIN codes. One single incident resulted in a loss of 15,450 euros.

Criminals specifically target drivers over the age of 60, exploiting emotional vulnerability and a potential lack of familiarity with electronic payment methods. The scams often occur near parking lots or commercial areas. Faro currently leads in reported incidents, followed by Lisbon, Porto, Viseu, and Beja. The GNR expects the total financial impact for 2026 to significantly exceed that of the previous year.
