GNR training center in Portalegre disrupted by bed bug infestation

A bed bug infestation at the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) training center in Portalegre has disrupted the Guard Training Course. The Association of Guard Professionals (APG/GNR) described the situation as a “very serious” matter and a public health issue, noting that over 400 trainees are affected.

The APG/GNR reported that trainees are living in “absolutely undignified conditions,” staying in temporary containers that have been in use for approximately 30 years. Reports include overcrowding, with up to 20 people per room in bunk beds without climate control, as well as the presence of cockroaches.

The GNR confirmed the presence of bed bugs in certain accommodation areas and sanitary facilities. While the association claimed the course was interrupted, the GNR clarified that in-person classes were temporarily suspended between September 16 and 18, shifting to a distance learning model to safeguard trainee health. A professional disinfection was conducted on September 11, with further intervention scheduled for September 18.
