Günther Oettinger to mediate Stuttgart Opera renovation dispute

Former Baden-Württemberg Minister President Günther Oettinger has been appointed to lead an expert panel to resolve the ongoing dispute regarding the modernization of the Stuttgart Opera. The appointment was announced by Minister President Cem Özdemir and Stuttgart Mayor Frank Nopper.

The conflict centers on whether to renovate the historic 1912 Littmann building or construct a new facility. A 2019 estimate placed renovation costs at approximately one billion euros, but concerns regarding the economic climate and potential total costs reaching two billion euros have led to calls for a reassessment.

A major point of contention is the proposed 289 million euro interim venue intended to house the opera and ballet during a decade-long construction period. The expert group aims to find the most economical and efficient solution by the end of the year, evaluating both renovation and new construction options.
