Gönyeli shooting: Tayyar Alpdağ sentenced to two years in prison

The Nicosia Heavy Penal Court has sentenced Tayyar Alpdağ to two years in prison following a shooting incident in Gönyeli. The case involved charges of possession of explosive materials, causing serious harm, and firing in a residential area.

According to the court, the incident occurred on March 28, 2026, on Ecevit Street. Alpdağ used a licensed 9mm Canik pistol to fire seven shots at his neighbor, Erdoğan Öztürk, claiming the victim had been threatening him and his family. The shooting resulted in Öztürk being struck three times—twice in the right leg and once in the left—causing a broken leg and requiring hospital treatment.

In its ruling, the court noted that the victim had engaged in provocative behavior toward the defendant. Evidence presented included neighbor testimonies stating that Öztürk frequently harassed the defendant's family. Furthermore, the court noted that Öztürk had 19 prior police complaints against him and a history of treatment at the Barış Mental Health Hospital. The judge also highlighted that Alpdağ contacted the police and ambulance services himself immediately following the incident.
