Günzburger-Netzwerk meets to research Upper Rhine Jewish history

On September 24, 2026, over 40 professionals from archives, museums, and local memorial initiatives gathered in Breisach and Mackenheim for the ‘Günzburger-Netzwerk’ networking day. The event focused on the research and preservation of the interconnected history of Jewish communities along the Upper Rhine.

The network, established approximately one year ago by the Blaue Haus Breisach, aims to investigate the development of Jewish life in the region. A central figure of this research is Josef Günzburger, a Jewish community leader who negotiated an agreement with Margrave Karl III. Wilhelm of Baden, allowing Jewish families to settle in various towns including Eichstetten, Emmendingen, and Lörrach starting in 1716.

The meeting served as a preparatory step for a joint traveling exhibition regarding the ‘Günzburger communities.’ This exhibition is scheduled to open on April 4, 2027, at the Breisach Museum and will subsequently tour several participating municipalities, including Freiburg and Mackenheim.
