Go Nagai honored in Italy for impact on mecha genre

Japanese manga artist and animation pioneer Go Nagai was recently honored in Lucca, Italy, for his profound influence on the mecha genre and contemporary animation. Nagai is best known as the creator of Mazinger Z, a series that revolutionized science fiction by introducing the concept of a human pilot controlling a giant robot from an internal cockpit.

The series had a significant, albeit controversial, history in Europe. In Spain, for example, Mazinger Z premiered on TVE in 1978 to massive success, only to be canceled seven months later following complaints from parental associations regarding its stylized violence. Despite such historical resistance from conservative sectors in the 1970s, Nagai’s work has achieved global mythic status, particularly among Generation X audiences.
