Goa Chief Minister claims migrants commit over 90% of state crimes

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stated in the Goa Assembly that over 90% of crimes reported in the state are committed by migrants. While noting that many migrants arrive for work, Sawant claimed some become involved in offenses such as robbery, rape, and dacoity.

To improve security, the Chief Minister emphasized the necessity of police verification for both tenants and migrant laborers. He urged residents not to rent properties to unknown individuals without prior background checks by law enforcement.

Addressing concerns raised by Opposition MLA Viresh Borkar regarding a 43% increase in rape cases between 2021 and 2025, Sawant suggested the figures might appear high due to cases involving failed live-in relationships, elopements, and extramarital disputes. He also noted that increasing CCTV surveillance is not a definitive solution to theft, as criminals have learned to bypass such systems.
