Goa government signs Rs 5,000-crore LPG terminal deal

The Goa government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with energy trading group ANVI to develop a Rs 5,000-crore liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) import and storage terminal at Mormugao Port. The project aims to strengthen the state’s energy security and reduce reliance on road transport from neighboring states.

The terminal will be developed in two phases and will include an LPG berth, storage facilities, and a pipeline connecting to the port. The first phase is expected to provide a storage capacity of approximately 65,000 tonnes, which covers eight to nine months of Goa’s annual LPG consumption. This includes an emergency reserve of at least 7,500 tonnes to be released only upon government instruction.

Once fully operational, the facility is expected to handle around three million tonnes of LPG annually, supplying Goa as well as parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra. The project is also expected to create approximately 2,450 direct, indirect, and induced jobs, with at least 80% of permanent direct positions earmarked for local residents. Additionally, the agreement includes the establishment of the Goa Institute of LPG and LNG Technology to train up to 500 people annually.
