Goa University researcher develops ballistic composite from cashew waste
Gaurish Samant, a researcher at Goa University, has developed a sustainable composite material using cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) and natural bamboo fibre. The research, completed as part of a PhD in Mechanical Engineering under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Rajesh Suresh Prabhu Gaonkar, explores using agricultural waste for advanced engineering applications.
During experimental trials, the composite demonstrated potential for lightweight ballistic protection. Testing involving an INSAS rifle reportedly showed the material successfully arresting a bullet. Further ballistic impact testing was conducted at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) using a gas gun facility, where the composite successfully arrested a 5.54 mm projectile at velocities up to 1,174 m/s.
While the material shows promise as a lightweight and cost-effective alternative to conventional steel or synthetic fibre plates, formal evaluation and certification are ongoing. Future testing is planned at the National Forensic Sciences University and a DRDO laboratory in Chandigarh.
