Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou sets World Cup penalty record

Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou established a new World Cup record by facing the most missed penalties in tournament history. In the quarter‑final against France at the 2026 World Cup in Foxborough, Massachusetts, Bounou stopped Kylian Mbappé’s spot‑kick, bringing his total to seven penalties that did not result in a goal – surpassing legends such as Iker Casillas, Taffarel, and Goycochea. Morocco ultimately fell 2‑0, but the save reinforced Bounou’s reputation as a specialist in high‑pressure moments.

Born in Montreal, Canada, to Moroccan parents, Bounou grew up in Morocco and began his career at Wydad Casablanca. He later moved to Spain, playing for Atlético Madrid’s reserves, Real Zaragoza, Girona and most prominently Sevilla, where he won two UEFA Europa League titles. In 2023 he transferred to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. An international since 2013, Bounou has featured in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, earning the Zamora Trophy in La Liga for his defensive record.
