British Columbia transportation: GoByBike Week and rail restoration studies
British Columbia is seeing significant transportation developments, including the province-wide GoByBike Week from September 19 to 25. This initiative encourages cycling through community rides, celebration stations with free snacks and giveaways, and prize opportunities. In the Victoria region, the Victoria Regional Transit Commission and BC Transit are offering free transit to cyclists during the week, provided they use bus bike racks or show a helmet when boarding.
Separately, the federal government and the Capital Regional District (CRD) have pledged over $1.2 million to the Island Corridor Foundation. This funding will support feasibility and technical studies to explore restoring a rail connection between Vic West and Langford. The project, known as the Reconciliation Corridor Initiative, is an Indigenous-led effort involving the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. The studies will focus on corridor planning, land use, and identifying economic opportunities for the participating First Nations.
