Godavari River hits second danger level in Telangana, floods rescue dozens
The Godavari River rose to 48 feet at Bhadrachalam on July 31, prompting a second danger warning after the first was issued at 43 feet earlier that morning. The flow was recorded at 11.44 lakh cusecs. Authorities opened 24 crest gates on upstream reservoirs, releasing about 1.33 lakh cusecs downstream, and warned that a third warning could be raised at 53 feet.
Rescue teams saved 38 people trapped on a sand‑excavation ramp near Cherla in Bhadradri Kothagudem district. Floodwaters cut road links in Mulugu district, isolating villages and inundating NH‑163. Heavy rains also swamped tributaries, damaging crops and halting coal production at Singareni Collieries, with an estimated loss of Rs 18 crore.
In Andhra Pradesh, officials expect the river to reach the first flood warning level of 11.75 feet on Saturday. Three National Disaster Response Force teams and three State Disaster Response Force teams have been deployed, and relief centres with water, food, electricity and medical services have been set up for displaced residents.
