Nigeria: Tinubu expands CNG infrastructure and urges NLNG to reduce gas flaring
President Bola Tinubu has announced several initiatives aimed at reducing transportation costs and maximizing Nigeria's energy resources. Following a meeting with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Tinubu and state governors agreed to leverage Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles to lower transport fares, with a target implementation date of October 1.
To support this transition, the President directed the rollout of 500 additional CNG refueling stations, bringing the total planned number to 1,000 nationwide. The Presidential CNG Initiative has already converted over 120,000 vehicles, with 100,000 more conversion kits currently in progress. The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund is financing over 100 gas projects across the country.
Separately, President Tinubu met with the board of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG). He urged the company to prioritize domestic gas utilization and convert gas flaring into economic opportunities for Nigerian consumers. NLNG Managing Director Adeleye Falade reported that the company has generated over $150 billion since its inception, providing approximately $47 billion in dividends to shareholders, including the Nigerian government.
