Godswill Akpabio denies true membership in PDP

During a recent Nigerian Senate plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio claimed he was never truly a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The statement was made in response to remarks by Senator Jibrin Isah regarding the shared history of various senators within the PDP.

Akpabio described himself as a ‘progressive’ who had always rejected the PDP label, stating, ‘My spirit might be there, but my heart was never there.’ This assertion follows his eight-year tenure as the governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2015, a period during which he served under the PDP and was nominated by PDP governors to chair the PDP Governors’ Forum.
