Godwin Francis Akpan's family petitions IGP over continued detention
The family of Godwin Francis Akpan has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, demanding his immediate release following a court order from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.
Represented by lawyer Edeh Uchenna, the family alleges that police authorities are flouting judicial authority by continuing Akpan's detention despite a valid discharge order. The detention reportedly stems from a police investigation into a commercial dispute between Akpan's employer and another company. While the family acknowledges the police's power to investigate, they argue that the continued custody of Akpan, who has not been charged in court, violates his fundamental rights and the rule of law.
The petition emphasizes that the discharge papers were served to relevant police formations, yet operatives have maintained custody without legal justification. The legal team has called for the police to respect the FCT High Court's directive and handle any remaining investigative matters through transparent, lawful channels.
