Godzilla celebrates 72 years since original film release
November 3 marks the anniversary of the 1954 release of Gojira, the original film produced by Toho that introduced Godzilla to cinema. Directed by Ishiro Honda, the film depicted a giant creature emerging from the ocean, serving as a metaphor for Japan's nuclear anxieties following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Lucky Dragon No. 5 incident involving hydrogen bomb testing.
Over seven decades, the character has evolved from a destructive force to a protector in various iterations, expanding from Japanese cinema to international markets and the Hollywood MonsterVerse. The anniversary coincides with the release of Godzilla Minus Zero in Japan, directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who previously directed the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One.
