Goethe-Haus in Weimar to close for multi-year renovation

The Goethe Residence in Weimar, a UNESCO World Heritage site, will close at the end of this month for a major renovation project. The site will remain open to visitors until November 1, after which a multi-year restoration of the ensemble—including the house, garden, pavilions, and gatehouse—will begin.

The project is estimated to cost approximately 30 million euros, funded by the federal government, the state, and private foundations. The renovation aims to preserve the historic building fabric, restore historical surfaces, update technical systems, and improve accessibility, operational processes, and fire protection.

During the transition, the Goethe National Museum will also experience temporary closures for foyer and lecture hall renovations from November 2 to November 30. The museum is scheduled to reopen on December 1 with a new exhibition. The Goethe Residence is expected to reopen in 2029, featuring a revised curatorial presentation that explores Goethe as a researcher, collector, and family man.
