Goethe's culinary habits: Historian uncovers poet's love for ice cream
Historian Heiner Stahl has conducted research into the culinary preferences of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, specifically focusing on his consumption of sweets and ice cream. By examining Goethe’s historical receipts, Stahl discovered that the poet was a regular customer at a confectioner in Weimar.
Goethe’s records reveal a preference for various treats, including biscuits, macarons, and ice cream in flavors ranging from strawberry to Maraschino. The research highlights Goethe’s deep connection to Italy, noting that he ordered ice cream in large quantities. At the time, a container of vanilla ice cream cost five guilders, which is approximately equivalent to 150 euros today.
