GoFundMe refunds $745K after viral campaign organizer posed as neighbor

GoFundMe has shut down a viral fundraising campaign that raised approximately $745,000 for Don Johnson, an 81-year-old delivery driver from The Colony, Texas. The platform removed the fundraiser and initiated full refunds to all donors after discovering “factual misrepresentations” that violated its Terms of Service.

The campaign was organized by a woman using the pseudonym “Erin Howell,” who claimed to be a neighbor moved by seeing Mr. Johnson working long hours to support his wife, Josephine, during her battle with cancer. However, an investigation by GoFundMe’s Trust and Safety team, prompted by a community tip, revealed that the organizer was actually the couple’s daughter.

During a recorded call with the platform, the organizer admitted to inventing the neighbor persona, stating she believed the story would reach more people if it appeared to come from a stranger. While she maintained that the underlying details regarding her parents' circumstances were true, GoFundMe determined that the lack of authenticity required the campaign's removal to protect donor trust.
