Insurgency in northern Mozambique causes panic and displacement

Insurgent activity continues to destabilize northern Mozambique, with reports of extremist movements causing panic in the Macomia district of Cabo Delgado. Residents in the Nkóe community have reported increased tension due to the presence of armed groups near agricultural areas along the Messalo River. Following the looting of a corn field, some residents fled to Nova Zambézia. Extremists associated with the Islamic State have claimed responsibility for several attacks in the district, including clashes with security forces.

In the Niassa province, security forces recovered two vehicles—a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Land Cruiser—stolen during a recent attack in the Marrupa district near the Niassa Special Reserve. The vehicles, belonging to Mozambique Wild Adventures, were found abandoned near the Ruambeze River. While the vehicles were retrieved, 11 employees kidnapped during the incursion remain missing. The attack forced the displacement of over 2,700 people and is believed to be linked to the same insurgent groups operating in Cabo Delgado.
