Goiânia City Hall demolishes abandoned building in city center

The Goiânia City Hall, through the Municipal Secretariat of Efficiency, demolished an abandoned building on Rua 74 in the city's central district on Friday, September 18. The property had been vacant for over ten years and had its structure condemned by Civil Defense.

Local authorities stated the site posed significant public health and security risks. The building had become a collection point for trash and breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits diseases such as dengue, zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. Officials noted increased concern regarding these mosquito breeding sites due to the approaching rainy season.

Additionally, the Municipal Guard reported that the abandoned structure was being used as a hideout for criminal activities and by individuals experiencing homelessness. Fernando Peternella, the Secretary of Efficiency, and Gustavo Toledo, commander of the Municipal Guard, emphasized that the demolition follows a directive from Mayor Sandro Mabel to eliminate abandoned locations that threaten public safety and health.
