Goiânia implements first free left turn to improve traffic flow

The city of Goiânia has implemented its first ‘free left turn’ (esquerda livre) at the intersection of avenues T-3 and T-10 in the Setor Bueno district. This new traffic measure aims to improve vehicle flow and reduce congestion, particularly during peak hours, without altering existing traffic light cycles.

The system allows drivers traveling on T-3 who wish to access T-10 in the uphill direction to make left turns continuously without waiting for a green light, provided they follow specific signage. This initiative follows the successful model of ‘free right turns’ already established at 110 locations throughout the city. The implementation was made possible by recent expansion work on Avenue T-10, which now features four lanes to accommodate the turning traffic.

Mayor Sandro Mabel stated that the project was developed following detailed monitoring of vehicle movement in the area. He indicated that the administration will evaluate other intersections with similar configurations to determine if the model can be replicated elsewhere. During the initial phase, teams from the Municipal Secretariat of Traffic Engineering (SET) will be present to guide drivers and pedestrians.
