Goiânia Metro launches biometane bus fleet renewal plan

The Metropolitan Region of Goiânia in Brazil will add 1,590 new buses to its public‑transport fleet by early 2027, using a mix of electric, biometane and natural‑gas‑compressed (CNG) vehicles. The plan is backed by state legislation that incentivises biogas and biometane production (laws from 2020, 2024 and a 2025 decree) and aims to cut particulate matter and greenhouse‑gas emissions.

José Eduardo Luzzi, president of the MBC Brasil Institute and commercial‑vehicle director of the Brazilian Auto Parts Association, said the initiative shows how public policy, regional industry and multiple low‑emission technologies can work together in Brazil’s energy transition. He highlighted the need for a stable supply chain and guaranteed demand from public transport to scale biometane use.

The strategy aligns with a study on low‑carbon mobility in Brazil that recommends combining electrification, ethanol, biodiesel and biometane according to regional conditions, and stresses the importance of regulatory predictability, infrastructure expansion and public‑private coordination.
