Goiânia plans to end paid parking and revamp Praça Ciro Lisita

The Goiânia City Council is considering a bill that would eliminate the "Área Azul" paid‑parking system, revoking the 2003 law that mandates hourly fees for public street spaces. The proposal argues that removing fees could improve access to commercial districts such as Centro, Campinas and the 44 region, but mobility experts warn that without pricing and time limits the turnover of spots may drop, leading to longer vehicle stays and reduced access for shoppers and workers.

In a parallel effort, the municipal government is reconfiguring Praça Ciro Lisita on Avenida Castelo Branco. The project adds two new traffic lanes on either side of the square, aims to increase corridor capacity by more than 30 % and reduce congestion. The redesign preserves existing trees by transplanting an ipê and a bacuri to a municipal nursery before returning them to the plaza. Additional upgrades include improved drainage through permeable surfaces and renewed landscaping, while maintaining the square’s role as a public gathering place.
