Goiânia ranks 110th globally in Oxford Economics environmental index

Goiânia has achieved the 110th position in the environmental indicator of the 2026 Global Cities Index, a ranking by Oxford Economics that evaluates one thousand cities worldwide. In this category, the Brazilian city outperformed major international metropolises, including New York, Boston, Dallas, and Tokyo. It also ranked ahead of 11 of the 29 Brazilian cities included in the study.

The environmental category assesses how cities respond to climate change based on five criteria: air quality, CO2 emission intensity, exposure to natural disasters, temperature anomalies, and rainfall patterns. The city's metrics were consolidated using data from various organizations, including the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, C40 Cities, and the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM).

Goiânia's performance reflects recent municipal public policy advancements. In 2026, the city received a medal from the GCoM for completing essential steps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, such as establishing a municipal inventory, setting reduction targets, and developing climate action plans. Additionally, the city participates in the federal Resilient Green Cities Program.
