Goiânia tree fall sparks debate over urban management

A large branch from a Ficus tree fell at Praça da Cirrose in the Setor Oeste neighborhood of Goiânia on Saturday (19). While no injuries were reported, the incident has reignited a debate regarding the management and removal of high-risk trees in the capital.

Local authorities, including the Municipal Environmental Agency (Amma) and Civil Defense, have begun signaling the area to warn pedestrians of potential falling debris. Technical assessments indicate that two trees require complete removal and two others require pruning due to structural failures and damage from previous fires. However, the Public Ministry of the State of Goiás (MP-GO) has recommended suspending any cutting operations for the time being.

In response to the impasse, Mayor Sandro Mabel has submitted a bill to the City Council to establish civil liability for individuals or groups that block or delay the removal of technically condemned trees. The proposal suggests that those responsible for preventing necessary maintenance could be held legally accountable for any damages or injuries resulting from tree falls during the period of suspension.
