Goiás court orders man to reimburse ex-wife after 29-day marriage

A court in Anápolis, Goiás, has ordered a man to compensate his former wife after their marriage lasted only 29 days. Judge Thiago Inácio de Oliveira ruled that the defendant must pay R$ 13,658.60 for material damages and R$ 5,000 in moral damages.

The ruling follows allegations of “sentimental fraud,” where the woman claimed she was induced to cover nearly all wedding, honeymoon, and household expenses under the promise of future reimbursement. Evidence presented during the three-year legal process suggested the man used the emotional relationship to gain undue financial advantage, a behavior the judge characterized as unjust enrichment.

While the defense argued the union was genuine and that the financial difficulties were a result of a previous divorce rather than intentional deceit, the court found that the pattern of behavior caused emotional distress and financial burden to the victim. The defense has indicated intentions to appeal the decision.
