Goiás economy shows strong growth and agricultural leadership

The state of Goiás has experienced significant economic expansion, growing 11.1% in real terms between 2014 and 2023. This rate is more than double the national average of 5.4% for the same period. Consequently, Goiás has solidified its position as the ninth-largest economy in Brazil, increasing its share of the national GDP from 2.9% in 2014 to 3.1% in 2023.

This economic progress is accompanied by improvements in the labor market. The average unemployment rate in Goiás fell to 5.8% in 2023, down from 10.7% in 2019. Additionally, the average real income of workers rose to R$ 2,891 in 2023. State government estimates suggest the state's GDP could reach R$ 389.6 billion by 2025.

In the agricultural sector, Goiás remains the national leader in tomato production. According to IBGE estimates for September 2026, the state is projected to produce 1.34 million tons of tomatoes. While this represents a decrease from record harvests in 2024 and 2025, Goiás maintains the largest planted area and the highest average yield in Brazil. Key producing municipalities include Silvânia, Cristalina, and Morrinhos.
