Goiás faces energy bottlenecks in cattle farming amid bioenergy expansion

Agricultural sector developments in Goiás are facing a dichotomy of infrastructure challenges and energy expansion opportunities. According to data from the Expedição PeseBem, released by the Faeg/Senar/Ifag system, the lack of electrical energy is the primary bottleneck for the expansion of cattle feedlots in the state, particularly in the northern region.

Field research conducted across 50 feedlots identified that energy shortages, labor scarcity, and poor telecommunications coverage hinder technological adoption and livestock expansion. Despite these hurdles, there is notable progress in intensive production models and crop-livestock integration.

Simultaneously, the state of Goiás is actively promoting bioenergy development through various policies and tax benefits. The 'Goiás Mais Energia Rural' program aims to stimulate the production of biofuels, including ethanol, biogas, and biomethane, while encouraging the use of agricultural waste. To support this transition, the Foundation for Research Support of the State of Goiás (Fapeg) has launched initiatives providing funding for research and development in sustainable fuels and rural electrification.
