Goiás faces increased wildfire risk from drought and human activity
The state of Goiás is facing an increased risk of wildfires due to a combination of severe drought and human activity. Experts note that the Cerrado vegetation has become highly combustible as relative humidity frequently drops below 30% alongside high temperatures.
Authorities report that approximately 95% of these fires are caused by human actions, such as improper waste burning or discarded cigarettes, which are classified as environmental crimes under Law 9.605/1998. In August, the Goiás Fire Department responded to more than one thousand calls related to forest fires.
The environmental impact includes the destruction of vegetation and the loss of wildlife habitats. The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) continues to issue alerts regarding low humidity and associated risks.
