Goiás health authorities reinforce vaccination against meningitis and polio

The State Health Secretariat (SES) of Goiás is intensifying vaccination campaigns and epidemiological surveillance to combat meningitis and poliomyelitis. In 2026, the state recorded 147 cases of meningitis and 32 deaths.

Health officials emphasize that vaccination is the primary measure to prevent severe forms of meningitis caused by agents such as meningococci, pneumococci, and Haemophilus influenzae. Immunizations are available free of charge through the public health network.

Regarding poliomyelitis, authorities are warning of the risk of virus reintroduction due to declining vaccination coverage globally. While Brazil has not recorded cases since 1989, national assessments indicate a high risk of reintroduction. The SES-GO is monitoring Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) and requires health services to report suspected cases to municipal epidemiological surveillance within 24 hours to ensure rapid response and laboratory diagnosis.
