Goiás leads Brazil in raw leather reception
Goiás led Brazil in receiving raw bovine leather during the first quarter of 2026, accounting for approximately 2 million pieces, or 19% of the national total, according to IBGE data. The state's high volume is directly linked to its large-scale cattle ranching and slaughtering operations.
Despite the high volume of raw material, industry representatives note that a significant portion of the leather leaves Goiás before being processed. Emílio Bittar, vice-president of the Federation of Industries of the State of Goiás (Fieg), stated that the state could increase its economic impact by industrializing the leather locally. He noted that keeping the material within the state would boost employment, income, and tax revenue.
Industry leaders cited the 'Custo Brasil' and issues like double taxation as barriers to competitiveness. They suggested that implementing policies similar to those in Mato Grosso, Pará, or Mato Grosso do Sul—which aim to keep raw materials within their respective territories—could help the local tanning industry operate at full capacity.
