Goiás political alliances shift as vice-candidate selections spark internal negotiations

Political maneuvering continues in Goiás as candidates for vice-governor positions shape major electoral tickets.

In the Liberal Party (PL) ticket led by Senator Wellington Fagundes, businessman Reinaldo Morais, known as ‘Rei do Porco’, has emerged as a potential ‘Plan C’ to resolve internal friction. The party faced a crisis after the initial choice, Marcelo Maluf, declined, and the subsequent selection of physician Alencar Farina drew criticism from conservative supporters due to Farina’s past political affiliations with the PT. Morais, who has ties to the agribusiness sector, is being viewed as a way to pacify the party.

Meanwhile, in the ticket led by Daniel Vilela, Luiz do Carmo (PSD) has been selected as the vice-candidate. The decision has created a need for political reconciliation within the governing base, particularly with José Mário Schreiner (PSD), who was a leading contender and expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome. Do Carmo has stated his intention to meet with Schreiner and Adriano Rocha Lima to mitigate tensions and maintain unity ahead of the 2026 elections.
