Goiás public schools named finalists in Samsung science competition
Two public schools from the state of Goiás, Brazil, have been named among the ten finalists for the 13th edition of the Solve for Tomorrow Brasil 2026 competition. The initiative, organized by Samsung, encourages students and teachers to develop innovative solutions for community environmental challenges.
In Aruanã, students from Colégio Estadual em Período Integral (Cepi) Dom Cândido Penso developed the EcoRibeirinho project. This project involves a solar-powered buoy designed to monitor water quality in the Araguaia and Vermelho rivers. Using sensors to measure pH, temperature, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen, the device transmits data via radio without requiring an internet connection. The system is intended to send alerts to fishermen, fish farmers, and public officials regarding environmental changes.
In Itumbiara, students from Cepi Dom Veloso developed Sorgonex, a project focused on creating a low-cost bioherbicide using sorghum roots. The goal is to inhibit the growth of nutgrass, an invasive grass that harms crops and gardens, providing an alternative to synthetic products to benefit small-scale rural producers.
