Goiás reports 55% increase in ocular tissue donations
The state of Goiás, Brazil, recorded a 55% increase in ocular tissue donations between January and August 2026. This growth is attributed to a partnership between the Government of Goiás and the Federal University of Goiás (UFG) through the Eye Bank of the Ophthalmology Reference Center (Cerof).
Specialized teams are working 24 hours a day in hospitals to identify potential cornea donors, approach families, and manage tissue preservation. Since resuming activities in February, the Eye Bank has surpassed 100 cornea procurements. The initiative targets a high demand for transplants, with over 1,800 people awaiting corneas in the state as of early September.
