Goiás reports 86% increase in drowning deaths

Goiás has seen an 86.2% increase in drowning deaths between January and July 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. According to data from the Military Firefighters Corps of Goiás (CBM-GO), there were 54 deaths recorded in the first seven months of this year, up from 29 in the previous year.

Notably, while the total number of rescue interventions saw a slight decrease from 93 to 90, the mortality rate among those incidents rose significantly. In 2025, deaths accounted for approximately 31.2% of interventions, whereas in 2026, that proportion reached 60%. Authorities have issued warnings regarding the risks associated with rivers, waterfalls, lakes, and reservoirs, particularly during school holiday periods when tourism increases.
