Goiás reports surge in traffic accidents and deaths, police and hospital say

The Federal Highway Police (PRF) recorded 15 accidents on federal highways in Goiás over the weekend, resulting in 16 injuries and one fatality—a 50‑year‑old motorcyclist killed in a collision with a truck on BR‑153 near Estrela do Norte. Police issued 697 traffic citations after inspecting 1,396 vehicles and 1,565 travelers on the state’s federal roads.

The Hospital Estadual de Urgências Governador Otávio Lage de Siqueira (Hugol) in Goiânia warned of a 17% rise in traffic‑accident admissions. In the first half of 2026 the hospital treated 2,024 victims, up from 1,731 in the same period of 2025, while state‑wide data show 40,974 accidents, 42,075 injuries and 334 deaths so far in 2026. Hospital officials stress that many patients arrive with severe poly‑trauma, emphasizing the need for public awareness campaigns such as the May Yellow road‑safety initiative.
