Goitseone Phoko shines as Botswana goalkeeper in draw against Tunisia

Botswana goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko has gained international attention following a standout performance in a 2-2 draw against Tunisia during the African Cup of Nations. The 31-year-old keeper recorded six crucial saves to help his national team secure the unexpected result.

Phoko possesses an unconventional physical profile for a modern goalkeeper, standing at 163 centimeters and weighing approximately 80 kilograms. Despite his stature, he has established a successful career, previously playing for Gaborone United, where he won a league title and two national cups, and Jwaneng Galaxy. He has earned 37 caps for the Botswana national team.

In June, Phoko made his first international move by signing a two-year contract with South African club Siwele FC, a transfer supported by national team coach Morena Ramoreboli. Phoko also holds a unique place in Botswana's football history as the first goalkeeper to score a goal for the national team, a feat achieved during the 2022 COSAFA Cup against Angola.
