Goji berry trial cultivation succeeds in Tatvan, Bitlis

In the Tatvan district of Bitlis, Turkey, a trial cultivation of goji berry has proven successful. Local grower Mehmet Okay planted the fruit near the shores of Lake Van, utilizing the area's microclimate to help the plants adapt to the local soil and climate.

Known in traditional Chinese medicine as ‘Gou Qi Zi’, the goji berry is categorized globally as a ‘superfood’ due to its antioxidant properties and perceived benefits for liver, kidney, and eye health. Despite being a plant typically associated with harsher Chinese geographies, the seedlings in Tatvan showed rapid adaptation and high yields within their first year.

Following the successful initial harvest, Okay plans to expand production by multiplying the seedlings for larger-scale cultivation next year. The project is viewed as a potential high-value agricultural alternative for the region, offering possibilities for both fresh consumption and processed dried products.
