Gol aircraft returns to Recife after engine fire caused by bird strike
A Gol Linhas Aéreas flight, GL 1587, was forced to return to Recife International Airport on Monday after a bird strike caused the right engine to catch fire. The aircraft was en route from Recife to Guarulhos when the incident occurred shortly after takeoff.
Passengers reported hearing explosions and seeing flames through the windows, leading to moments of panic. To ensure a safe landing, the pilot performed a fuel-burning procedure to reduce the aircraft's weight. Despite the technical failure and visible fire, Aena Brasil, the airport administrator, stated that no emergency was officially declared and all passengers disembarked normally.
The Brazilian Air Force has classified the event as an aeronautical incident. The aircraft has been sent for maintenance, and the Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center (Cenipa) has been notified to investigate the cause.
