Gol Flight 1907 tragedy marks 20 years in Brazil

September 29, 2026, marks the 20th anniversary of the Gol Flight 1907 accident, a major tragedy in Brazilian aviation history. The collision between a Boeing 737 and a Legacy 600 executive jet over the Amazon rainforest resulted in 154 fatalities.

Investigations into the disaster revealed a sequence of human, operational, and communication failures regarding airspace control. The incident involved the Legacy 600, piloted by American pilots Joe Lepore and Jan Paladino, which was traveling from São José dos Campos to the United States. A critical failure occurred when the aircraft maintained an altitude of 37,000 feet due to ambiguous flight instructions, placing it on a direct collision course with oncoming traffic after its transponder was deactivated.
