Golborne railway station construction begins
Construction has commenced on a new railway station in Golborne, reconnecting the town to the rail network for the first time in over 60 years. Located on the West Coast Main Line, the station is expected to open in spring 2028.
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) indicates the new service could reduce journey times to Manchester city centre by up to 30 minutes. The planned hourly service will run between Wigan and Stalybridge via Manchester Victoria. The station will feature step-free access, lifts, a footbridge, digital information screens, and passenger assistance intercoms.
Engineering firm Murphy has been appointed to lead the build. The project is a partnership between TfGM, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, and Wigan Council, supported by locally devolved government funding. Improvements to the surrounding area will include enhanced walking, cycling, and wheeling routes, as well as upgrades to the local town centre car park, including electric vehicle charging points.
