Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate disputes Trump dinner claims

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate is facing scrutiny following conflicting accounts regarding a purported dinner with US President Donald Trump, Melania Trump, Eric Trump, and Lara Trump at Mar-a-Lago.

Tate previously claimed he shared a meal of steaks with the President and remarked on the First Lady. However, the White House and the Trump Organization have both issued rebukes, with the latter calling his account a “fabrication” and “categorically false.”

A spokesperson for Tate’s office attempted to clarify that while the Australian delegation was dining with Eric Trump, the President entered the room to speak with the Mayor before dining at an adjacent table. Despite this clarification, Tate later reverted to his original claim of a private dinner.

The controversy stems from a February trip to Florida intended to witness a $1.5 billion deal for a Trump-branded tower in Surfers Paradise, a project involving developer David Young. The deal has since fallen through. Additionally, questions have been raised regarding the Trump Organization paying for the Mayor’s accommodation and expenses during his stay.
