Gold Fields lease renewal in Ghana seen as vital for mining sector and FDI
Benjamin Nsiah, executive director of the Centre for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE), warned Ghana’s government to fast‑track the renewal of Gold Fields’ mining lease. He said any delay could hurt the industrial mining segment, undermine investor confidence and slow foreign direct investment across sectors such as petroleum, critical minerals and other extractives. Nsiah urged the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Minerals Commission to bring finality to the process and clarify the state’s equity participation, possibly through the Minerals Income Investment Fund or a similar vehicle, and called for a review of mining laws.
Local chiefs, queen mothers and community leaders have also appealed for the lease extension, highlighting Gold Fields’ contributions to the Ghanaian economy, local‑content policies and its role in providing reliable power to mines after exiting the national grid.
