Gold Hits Record High as Eastern Nations Boost Strategic Reserves
Gold surged to a historic peak of $5,595.42 per ounce in early 2026 before delivering a sharp technical correction of about 10 %. Analysts highlighted the metal’s role as a long‑term stabiliser for portfolios, recommending limited exposure of around 10 % to temper monetary volatility.
At the same time, several eastern and emerging economies are markedly expanding their sovereign gold holdings. China, Poland, and Uzbekistan have accelerated purchases, seeking a political‑risk hedge after the 2022 seizure of Russian assets. China’s official tally stands at 2,313 tonnes, with estimates suggesting up to 5,000 tonnes, while Poland aims for 700 tonnes and Uzbekistan’s gold now comprises 87 % of its reserves. This shift underscores a broader move away from reliance on dollar‑denominated assets and establishes a permanent floor of demand for the metal.
The combined price dynamics and strategic accumulation signal intensified geopolitical competition over financial security, with gold serving as both an investment asset and a defensive reserve for states confronting Western sanctions.
