Gold investment options: Comparing ETFs, physical bullion, and futures

Investors seeking exposure to gold can choose between various instruments, including gold ETFs, physical bullion, and gold futures, each offering different advantages regarding cost, liquidity, and ownership.

Gold ETFs like the Goldman Sachs Physical Gold ETF (AAAU) and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) provide direct exposure to physical gold bullion without the need for personal storage. AAAU offers a lower expense ratio of 0.18% compared to GLD’s 0.4%, making it a potentially more cost-effective option for long-term holders. However, GLD remains a preferred choice for high-volume traders due to its deep liquidity and status as an industry pioneer.

Alternatively, physical gold allows for outright ownership of bullion but involves costs such as premiums, storage, insurance, and resale spreads. Gold futures, such as those on the COMEX, serve as derivative contracts used primarily for trading and hedging. While futures offer capital efficiency through leverage and the ability to take both long and short positions, they also introduce risks like margin calls, daily mark-to-market requirements, and contract expiration.
