Gold investment options: ETFs and Gold IRAs
Investors seeking exposure to gold as a hedge against inflation or geopolitical uncertainty have several options, including exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and Gold IRAs.
Two prominent gold-backed ETFs, the iShares Gold Trust (IAU) and the Goldman Sachs Physical Gold ETF (AAAU), provide similar exposure to gold bullion. While IAU manages significantly higher assets under management at $67.5 billion compared to AAAU’s $2.9 billion, AAAU offers a lower expense ratio of 0.18% versus IAU’s 0.25%. Both funds track the daily performance of gold and utilize institutional-grade secure vault storage.
For retirement planning, self-directed Gold IRAs allow individuals to hold physical precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. To comply with tax regulations, these metals must meet specific purity standards and be held by an approved depository rather than by the individual personally. Investors are advised to evaluate providers based on fees, storage arrangements, and rollover processes rather than marketing claims.
