Gold and silver prices surge amid fiscal concerns and rising ETF demand

Gold and silver markets are experiencing significant volatility and upward momentum driven by shifting fiscal and monetary expectations. Spot gold has traded near $4,630 per ounce, supported by concerns regarding the long-term purchasing power of the U.S. dollar and the U.S. Treasury’s decision to increase buybacks of long-dated bonds. This fiscal signal has fueled fears of currency debasement, providing a floor for bullion prices despite persistent inflation and potential Federal Reserve interest rate hikes.

Institutional demand is also rising. The SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) reported a substantial weekly net capital inflow of $1.97 billion, bringing its holdings to 1,045.50 tonnes. Additionally, the World Gold Council noted that central bank net gold purchases rose to 289 tonnes in the second quarter, following a recovery in global net inflows into physically backed gold ETFs, which reached $3 billion in July 2026.

Investors are closely monitoring upcoming remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole symposium, as his stance on monetary policy could significantly impact precious metal trajectories. While silver is also seeing strength due to industrial demand in green energy and AI sectors, analysts warn that the market remains sensitive to interest rate expectations and the strength of the U.S. dollar.
