Gold market outlook cites debt pressure, currency debasement and China settlement system

Matthew Piepenburg, partner at VON GREYERZ, discussed the current and future direction of gold at the Precious Metals Symposium in Florida with Charlotte Macleod. He noted that after record‑high prices earlier in the year, gold has corrected sharply. Piepenburg attributes the decline to three main forces: forced sales by sovereigns seeking liquidity amid war, algorithmic trading impacting hedge funds and ETFs, and alleged COMEX price manipulation.

He argued that while official yields appear positive, they are effectively negative when measured against real inflation, raising sovereign debt costs and prompting currency debasement. This, he said, is driving investors toward gold as a hedge. Piepenburg warned that confidence in the U.S. 10‑year Treasury is eroding, stating, "the UST is being openly replaced by gold as the new and more trusted global collateral." He also highlighted China’s upcoming June‑July plan to create a new clearing and settlement system with Hong Kong for pricing gold, signaling a shift in global monetary and trade architecture.
